BUNT-Baranavichy: Paying Respects to the Victims of Communism

BUNT activists from Baranavichy together with other local representatives of the democratic movement put in good order the site of the former prison “Crooked Stake.” A Cross in memory of the victims of Stalin’s victims was mounted at this prison’s site in 1992.

The activists cleaned up the territory, planted flowers around the Cross, and made nesting boxes for birds. Towards the end of the activities they also sang Belarusian hymn “Mighty God.”

A writer from Baranavichy, Alyaksandr Tataranka, in his book Forbidden Memory asserts that 5,000 Belarusians were executed by shooting on June 22, 1941, in the two Baranavichy prisons, “Amerykanka” and “Crooked Stake.”
